Long-running 2D MMORPG Tibia has dazzled old-timey gamers this week with a major summer drop that includes something special: weapon leveling.

“Weapons in Tibia can now be levelled up,” studio Cipsoft says. “In total, the new Weapon Proficiency System offers over 400 different skill trees. To level them, players simply have to equip a corresponding weapon and defeat monsters – the stronger the enemies, the more progress is granted. At each of the up to seven levels, one of a maximum of three perks can then be unlocked.”

The team explains that the system is meant “to appeal to experienced and new players alike,” with customization and playstyle features for both types of players; in fact, there’s even a cosmetic mastery system for weapons with new titles and cheevos, all without gameplay advantages.

The rest of the summer update includes a new questline where players enter a “magical medieval area made entirely of books,” which kinda sounds like threatening us with a good time. The teaser trailer is down below, but the update is already live.
