Remember how earlier this month Fantastic Pixel Castle wrote a dev blog that hinted at some of the building mechanics available in Project Ghost’s blue zones? And how it hinted that there would be more details later? Well, later is now, as that follow-up Ghost Stories post does indeed grant a peek at what that system is and how it works within these smaller scale areas.
While in a specific procedurally generated blue zone, players will be able to build “contraptions” – buildables like stairs, bridges, walls, or towers – that are effectively used to approach combat encounters or objectives within blue zones. Building these contraptions requires resources that are gathered in the specific blue zone, and once players leave that zone, those resources stay behind, so basically players are encouraged to use it or lose it.
Mercifully, some contraptions being concepted aren’t as mundane as stairs to solve the problem of going up a cliff; the devs are experimenting with other ideas such as buffing shrines, graveyards that serve as respawn points, defensive structures, or siege weapons like a catapult. Overall it sounds as if the system is still very nebulous, particularly as the team is focusing on combat but doesn’t want to scrap contraptions altogether, but apparently blue zones will have a little bit of that survivalbox building loop.
