While there is considerable interest in the very long-in-coming Grand Theft Auto VI, what many fans have long wondered is whether Rockstar is working on two versions of the game – i.e., including one that might be considered the multiplayer version of the game. Now, according to an insider leak, Rockstar is also developing the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online using Grand Theft Auto VI as the obvious base. This version, code-named GTA6MP (subtle!), aims to host up to 96 players per instance with increased performance and response. In comparison, GTAO is capped at 32 players on a map.
We’re probably in for a long wait for any sort of official confirmation about a massively multiplayer mode, especially considering that Grand Theft Auto VI recently delayed from this fall to May 2026. “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” the devs said back in May.
Worth noting is that earlier this year, Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick intimated that GTAO itself will likely be one of the “legacy titles” Rockstar will support well into the future.
