Stars Reach hits the reset button on character progress, adds new planets, missions, and tutorial

We hope you weren’t terribly attached to your characters in Stars Reach because as of the sandbox’s most recent update, everyone is going to have to start from scratch and make new characters. The trade-off, however, is there’s some new planets and gameplay features on offer beyond simply harvesting materials and turning rock into lava.

First off, the planets that were put together to test the game’s procedural generation are now deleted: Going forward there will be three persistent planets, the space zone, and the chance for wild wormholes to spawn. This patch also introduces an all-new tutorial section that guides players through various starting professions, granting them some starting gear and instructions, albeit less gear than previously offered.

Another major feature of the patch is a new starbase that serves as a central hub for the MMO, with a marketplace, social areas, and a mission board that will let players take up missions to earn a currency known as klaatus (we understand that reference). Missions are pretty basic for now, and klaatus can be spent only on titles right now, but both mission complexity and what klatuus can buy will be expanded later.

Other big features of this patch include a refactoring of inventory, the replacement of material and gemstone tiers with new rarities (meaning they’ll appear more or less frequently on planets), some improved flora, and a lineup of general updates like better loot drops from creature kills, creature taming foods making more logical sense, and a few bug fixes.
