Earlier this week, New World made what has unfortunately become a routine announcement as the MMORPG shrinks post-Aeternum: It was conducting yet another round of server merges. But this time, it was also condensing Xbox servers and PlayStation servers to one apiece, and as phrased, it’d be easy to miss that the accompany region squish basically meant that Amazon was getting rid of its Asia-Pacific and South American servers entirely.
Naturally, the AP, SA, and Aussie playerbases lit Amazon on fire across social media, Reddit, and Discord; people have been explaining how to get Steam refunds (to which Australian players are entitled), and earlier today there was even a protest in-game.
Apparently, the uproar has gotten Amazon to change its mind… somewhat.
“After thorough consideration of community feedback received about the planned world merges, the decision has been made to retain one world in the AP Southeast and SA East regions,” the studio announced tonight. “The decision to merge worlds is made with consideration for many areas affected by player population such as queue times, and availability of opportunities to take part in multiplayer content. Our goal is to provide the best experience for players possible, and we understand concerns around latency and how important performance is to players.”
The team had previously said that latency on the US servers was acceptable, so this is a bit of a reversal. Now, you’ll at least have a semi-local server to move to.
Of course, if you’re one of the people who already refunded, you might be out of luck getting your account back now. But if you didn’t, you can go join the party.
