This story is probably going to annoy and please you in equal measures, which may be why Fawkes’ Games held off so long on doing it: The studio is implementing Easy Anti-Cheat in its Defiance MMO revival. Tomorrow.

“To provide a fairer and more secure environment, we’ve implemented Easy Anti-Cheat into Defiance,” the studio says. “You will have to update your client. Without it, you won’t be able to continue playing.”

Servers will be down tomorrow morning for several hours while the game patches, and the accompanying Discord post tells players how to fix their drivers and make sure EAC is actually functioning so they can log in.

As an afterthought, Fawkes alerted players that since EAC works only on 64-bit operating systems and the game works only with EAC, players with 32-bit operating systems are now completely unable to play the game. Oof.

According to the community’s most vocal members, cheating and exploiting in Defiance have presented a serious problem in the game ever since Fawkes revived it this past spring, but Easy Anti-Cheat is broadly despised for bugs, instability, false positives, and generally being an invasive species from a third-party that neither legit players nor cheaters want infesting the core of their expensive machines and putting their performance and privacy at risk. Worse, EAC doesn’t even catch all of the cheats that game devs hope it will. In other words, the pushback inside the Defiance community has only just begun.

Either way, consider that your PSA if you don’t want EAC on your PC.
