Wednesday, July 23rd, is looking to be a red letter day for Old School RuneScape, as the elder statesman MMORPG is readying to drop its Varlamore: The Final Dawn update – and Jagex is expecting a pretty big upswell of players thanks to both it and the recent attention being afforded the game thanks to WoW livestreamer interest.

Jagex confirmed that “player numbers are booming” in a recent tweet that also announced the addition of multiple new servers that have opened ahead of The Final Dawn’s release: six total in the US and two for the UK. The studio also thanked fans for the surge in interest after the MMORPG crested over 200K players this past Sunday, and while many are suggesting most of those are either bots or multiboxers, others are lauding a “platinum age” for the game.

Meanwhile over in RuneScape, Jagex is “experimenting” with the MMORPG’s overwhelming monetization by first disabling Treasure Hunter, aka its lockbox model. Between now and July 28th, lockbox keys will be disabled and will be replaced with buyable XP bundles that are limited to one purchase per bundle per day, while the studio will assess the effect of these changes via data gathering and survey replies.
