You aren’t really surprised when it turns out that one of the biggest MMORPGs on the market is having congestion issue, and that’s exactly what the Asura server is dealing with right now because of… wait. Hold on. Asura is… that’s a Final Fantasy XI server. That’s the old MMORPG. Are we sure we got this right? Is this… yes, it’s accurate. We now have a letter from producer and director Yoji Fujito about dealing with player congestion issues on the Asura server. There are too many players on this server of a 23-year-old game.
Of course, Fujito has a plan for mitigating the congestion, disallowing making new characters or transferring existing ones to Asura while looking into measures to equalize the population across more servers moving forward.
Still, this serves as an excellent reminder that old things both need and deserve love like everything else. Good on you, FFXI. Most people wouldn’t see server congestion as a win, but we sure do. We see you.
